HTC 10: How to Boot into Download Mode

Booting into the HTC 10 Download Mode is a very simple process, and all you need to do is follow these steps to boot into this special mode.

Download Mode on the HTC 10 can be used for a number of different things. From the menu alone, we have the ability to show the system information, show the barcode, reboot into Bootloader Mode, reboot back into Download Mode, reboot back into Android or simply shut down the HTC 10.

This mode will also be useful for things like flashing a custom ROM, custom kernel, unlocking the bootloader and more.

Not all Android smartphones have a Download Mode. Samsung is a big OEM that uses this mode for their smartphones and it’s required to boot into this special mode if you ever want to flash firmware with software called Odin. While not exactly the same, this does share some similarities with HTC’s devices as they’ve been using Download Mode for a long time as well. So naturally, you will want to know how to get there.

HTC 10 Download Mode

  1. Power off the HTC 10
  2. Press and hold the Power and Volume Down buttons at the same time
  3. Continue holding these two buttons until the HTC 10 Download Mode screen appears
  4. Then let go of the Power and Volume Down buttons

Explanation

I’m not going to go into much detail about all of the things we can do with Download Mode on the HTC 10 right now. As mentioned above though, this mode does give us access to things like the system information, the barcode, and a way to boot into Bootloader Mode (which is also known as Fastboot Mode). In future tutorials, I will reference back to this guide when it is needed. So I will be going into detail in those articles.

We will need to start with the HTC 10 powered down. So press and hold the Power button to bring up the Power Menu. Then simply tap on the Power Off option to shut down the smartphone. Once the device is completely off, you can press and hold the Power button and Volume Down buttons at the same time. You will see the HTC 10 start to boot up and display the HTC logo.

You’ll want to keep holding these two buttons down through this logo though. You’ll then see the logo disappear, and then you will see the HTC 10 Download Mode menu appear (it’s a lot of text). By default, System Information is highlighted, but you can control this by pressing the Volume Up and Volume Down buttons. Once you have highlighted the option you want to select, you can then press the Power button.

There’s not much else too it, but again, this is something that you most likely need to know about. If you don’t have any interest in rooting or modifying your device, then you will probably never need to get into the HTC 10 Download Mode. For those of us who enjoy rooting and tweaking our smartphones though, this is something that we will all need to know how to do.

  1. Bad guide. If you continue holding vol- and power the phone will restart loop.

You need to hold both until it vibrates, then you just continue holding the vol- (no the power).
