LG G5: Customize Navigation Bar

You can move, adjust and completely remove buttons on your LG G5 Navigation Bar and today I want to show you how that’s done.

Everyone has their own personal preferences when it comes to whether they enjoy software navigation buttons or hardware navigation buttons. There is no right or wrong way because we’re all different and what we like the most is up to us. There are both positives and negatives to both methods here, and it’s nice to see OEMs make use of these advantages from time to time.

LG has made it so that we can move, adjust, remove, change the color and hide the software navigation buttons with the LG G5.

This is great because it gives users the ability to customize the software the way we want it. Don’t like the white navigation bar on the LG G5? That’s cool, just change it black in the settings. Don’t like having to reach up to swipe down the notification panel? That’s cool, just add the notification button to your navigation bar. With the LG G5, we can have up to 5 different buttons in the navigation bar and we have a total of 6 to choose from. Best of all, we can move and adjust these however we like.

Even better. If you’re tired of the navigation bar covering up so much of the screen, then you can simply tell the LG G5 to hide the navigation bar when you’re in certain applications.

LG G5 Customize Navigation Bar

  1. Launch the Settings Application
  2. Tap on the ‘Display’ Tab
  3. Tap on the ‘Home Touch Buttons’ Option
  4. Then Configure the LG G5 Navigation Bar to How You Like it

Explanation

Personally, I enjoy software navigation buttons the most and that’s for a couple of reasons. The main reason is because they are customizable. Even if Google or other Android OEMs don’t let you customize the Navigation Bar within the core Android OS, you could still make changes if you have root access. LG has baked these features right into the OEM skin and these feature are some of my favorite ones that LG has to offer.

So to access these features, we simply need to launch the Settings application, tap on the Display tab and then tap on the Home Touch Buttons option in the list. I’m not sure why LG felt the need to change the name of the Navigation Bar Buttons to Home Touch Buttons as they don’t really have anything to do with the home screen. Sure, the circle button will take you to the home screen, but the other two buttons don’t have anything to do with the home screen.

So once we get here, you’ll notice there are three different options to choose from. The first option will let you add, remove or move around the software navigation buttons to however you like them the most. This is great if you prefer the back button to be on the right side of the screen (like Samsung has theirs), or if you want to add in some of the optional buttons that LG gives us. The second option will let you change the background color of the navigation bar to either black or white.

Lastly, the third option will let you choose which applications you want the navigation bar to be hidden from. You’ll still be able to access these buttons, you’ll just need to swipe up from the bottom of the screen. If you’re unclear exactly how this works, be sure to check out the video embedded above because I demonstrate this with the Chrome application. I like this because I prefer to not have the navigation bar taking up screen space when I’m using certain applications. I just wish LG gave us the option to hide the navigation bar on all apps, instead of having to manually toggle the option for each app individually.
