Apple Adds ‘Contact Key Verification’ to iMessage in iOS 17.2

Apple has rolled out iOS 17.2 to eligible iPhones this week, which packs many new features, including the iMessage Contact Key Verification.

Enabling this setting will enhance your communication security, where any hacker breaching your chats will be immediately notified. You can also share a security code with the recipient to ensure your connection is secure. Users should log in to their iCloud account and run the latest iOS 17.2 to see this feature.

iMessage Contact Key Verification in iOS

Apple is upping it’s security profile by adding support for Contact Key Verification on iMessage, which makes communication more secure. The company previewed this feature in December last year and has now rolled out widely through iOS 17.2, iPadOS 17.2, macOS Sonoma 14.2 and watchOS 10.2 betas.

People with iCloud logged in and running on the above-mentioned versions can avail this feature, which notifies them if any malicious entity has somehow breached Apple cloud data servers and trying to eavesdrop on user conversations.

Aimed at people with “extraordinary digital threats“, like journalists, human rights activists, and government officials, iMessage Contact Key Verification “uses Key Transparency to enable automatic verification that the iMessage key distribution service returns device keys that have been logged to a verifiable and auditable map”.

While it can automatically verify, users can manually share a Contact Verification Code in person or FaceTime to double-check. Apple added this feature after a row of accusations in the last couple of years that hackers were able to breach into user communications and services like ISO Group’s Pegasus were able to spy on specific targets.
