Apple Music to Pay 10% Extra to Artists Offering Spatial Audio

Apple Music is paying 10% more to artists who offer their content to Spatial Audio mode, despite the user engagement ratio.

With Spatial Audio content rising 5x in the last two years, Apple wanted to cash in on this rise, as it sees Spatial Audio plays have more than tripled in the last two years. Thus, an increased royalty fee to artists supporting Spatial Audio is an encouraging move.

Increased Royalties for Spatial Audio

Riding on the new-age audio hype, Apple Music wanted to reward it’s artists who offer their content in Spatial Audio mode to attract more people to listen to them. In this pursuit, the platform is offering an extra 10% royalty to those artists providing their content in Spatial Audio.

Crucially, users don’t need to listen to the Spatial Audio version of their songs to reward the artists, noted 9to5Mac, as they’ll still be paid a 10% extra for just making their content available in Spatial Audio. Apple says this reward is deserving for the artists who offer higher quality content, as a compensation for the additional time and effort they put in to mix in Dolby Atmos.

Thus, Apple Music will only consider the proportion of Spatial Available to Non-Spatial Available plays and pay accordingly. The increased payouts will start showing up this month, notes Apple.

Apple is aggressively making moves to expand it’s Spatial Audio catalogue as more people are inclined to this new audio format. The company noted the number of songs available in Spatial Audio has increased by nearly 5000% since 2021, with that number more than doubling in the last year alone.

Also, more than 90% of Apple Music subscribers have tried listening to a song in Spatial Audio and the total number of Spatial Audio plays has more than tripled in the last two years. This immersive surround sound can be experienced via AirPods Pro, AirPods Max, and other headphones.
