Less than a month after Elon Musk changed Twitter’s name and logo, the rebranding is facing several challenges on the technical front already.
This week, app updates pushed to Google Play Store have successfully changed Twitter’s icon and name to X, but that’s failing in the case of Apple’s Apple Store, which prohibits Twitter from changing the name as the rebrand is just one word! An App Store policy notes the app’s name to be at least two words!
Blocked Due to Short App Name
Twitter’s rebranding is causing silly technical issues for the company, as it faces it’s first strike today. Earlier this week, X(formerly Twitter) passed app updates to revamp the platform’s icon and name – that’s partially blocked by Apple on it’s App Store!
As noted by many users, updating the Twitter app on iOS this week turns the icon X, but the app name stays as Twitter. This is because Apple blocked the name change citing it was too short! Well, an App Store policy regarding this states the iOS app names “can be up to 30 characters long” but should be at least two characters in length, failing which Apple will reject the app name.

And this is what strictly held back Twitter’s name change on iPhones and iPads, despite the app icon turning to X. Well, this isn’t the case on Google Play, which updated both the app name and icon to X on it’s listing page. However, the app still appears as “Twitter” among installed apps on the device. Further, the application package(APK) ID remains com.Twitter.Android too.
The rebranding has also affected Twitter’s credibility on web browsers, as Microsoft Edge on Windows is flagging the Twitter PWA as a security risk, misunderstanding it’s icon and name change to that of malware.
