Apple is reportedly exploring the possibility of attaching a touch display to the AirPods case – to let users manage songs playback and check a few apps.
The functionality would even expand to let users transfer songs to HomePod – and play them on it. This shall replace the Apple Watch as a companion accessory for the AirPods, which is needed for managing them remotely.
Apple Case With a Touch Display
Apple’s AirPods have transformed a lot since their inception in 2016, with the OEM adding new features and upgraded hardware on every iteration – making it one of the best wireless earbuds on the market.
But, other OEMs’ are competing aggressively in this space – making AirPods a tough choice for consumers. Well, Apple has patented a new technology that would help it’s AirPods stand out, one day.
As per Patently Apple, the US Patent & Trademark Office has granted Apple a new patent for a redesigned AirPods charging case. Renders of the new case show a touchscreen display on the case’s front, similar to Apple Watch. And the description shows the newly upgraded device lets users control media and even access basic apps like Maps, Weather and notifications.
Further, the report notes the ability to switch between apps using Siri commands and even transferring a song from the AirPods to a HomePod using the Handoff support. All these seem to be reviving the dead iPod – which Apple killed last year, after more than 20 years of their existence.
The above patent was filed by Apple in September 2022 – revealing that the company is still in the early stages of exploring this possibility. Also, since there are no rumours regarding this one yet – except for the current patent – Apple may take years to bring this live.
