Apple tops Smartphone Sales in 2023, Surpassing Samsung

Apple has ended a decade-long position of Samsung being the No.1 smartphone OEM by sales, as the Cupertino-based company has sold more smartphones than Samsung in 2023.

Market researchers IDC and Canalys reported that Apple topped the 2023 shipment chart with 234.6 million units, while Samsung sold 226.6 million units. Xiaomi, Oppo and Transsion followed these.

No.1 Smartphone Seller in 2023

Though Apple is one of the most sought-after brands, it has been unable to topple Samsung in smartphone sales for over a decade. Since 2009, Samsung has been the No.1 smartphone seller by shipping millions of units yearly.

Well, this grand record has now ended, as two prominent market researchers, IDC and Canalys, reported that Apple sold more smartphones than Samsung in 2023. Though IDC cautions that it’s data is preliminary and subject to change, it’s claim of Apple tackling Samsung is backed by Canalys, making the Cupertino company the No.1 smartphone seller in 2023.

IDC noted that Apple sold 234.6 million units in 2023, against Samsung’s 226.6 million units for the same period. These are followed by Xiaomi, Oppo, and Transsion with 145.9, 103.1 and 94.9 million smartphones, respectively.

This is also the first time Apple has topped the chart, with Samsung being the No.1 smartphone seller since 2009! In 2008, when Samsung was in second place, Apple wasn’t even in the top 5!. The list was dominated by Nokia at that time, followed by Samsung, LG Electronics, ZTE and Research in Motion(manufacturers of BlackBerry devices).
