Discord is the latest tech company to announce workforce layoffs, cutting 17% of it’s staff this week, representing around 170 people.
Discord blamed over-hiring as the cause, like other tech firms firing their staff this month. So, to be more efficient and “bring more agility to the organization”, Discord has cut the extra workforce.
Workforce Layoffs at Discord
Though Discord is one of the fastest-growing online communities, it’s not an exception from the workforce layoff spree that’s been happening since last year. In this pursuit, Discord announced laying off 17% of it’s workforce this week, representing about 170 people.
This was first reported by The Verge, citing an internal memo penned by Discord CEO Jason Citron. In an all-hands meeting on Thursday, Citron said,
“We grew quickly and expanded our workforce even faster, increasing by 5x since 2020. As a result, we took on more projects and became less efficient in how we operated. Today, we are increasingly clear on the need to sharpen our focus and improve the way we work together to bring more agility to our organization. This is what largely drove the decision to reduce the size of our workforce.”
Discord is one of the many platforms that saw massive growth during pandemic lockdowns but could not cash in on this opportunity, as it still in losses. Last year, the company laid off 4% of it’s workforce across marketing, design and entertainment partnerships, citing corporate restructuring. And now, cutting more staff, citing fast growth and over-hiring.
This chapter goes into a wave of layoffs the tech industry is witnessing, where severe key companies have announced cutting staff to improve efficiency. Some include Unity, which announced dumping 1,800 employees, Google axing staff from hardware and central engineering departments and Amazon downsizing it’s subsidiaries like Audible, Twitch and MGM Studios.
