Google is expanding it’s Gmail’s mail merge functionality by letting users add spreadsheets in their mass emailing campaign, making it easier with just a few clicks.
This is an excellent addition to advertisers or newsletter servers, who often send mass emails to different subscribers. Google says a correctly filled spreadsheet with up to 1,500 data points(names and email addresses) can be used in mail merge and the recipients hitting unsubscribe will automatically be removed from the list.
Spreadsheets Support in Mail Merge
Though Gmail is an essential product in the Google suite, it’s often tuned to suit the needs of the average user. This means the platform lacked a critical functionality helpful for advertisers – customised mass emailing to a targeted group quickly.
Well, this was worked on last year with the introduction of Mail Merge, where Gmail started letting users send emails in bulk, mentioning their specific names in the body. Users can trigger the saved list with @ call, select the recipient’s name, and hit send.
This functionality is improved now with the addition of spreadsheet support. Google says that users can now add spreadsheet-full data(having recipients’ names and email addresses) for mass emailing. For this, the user needs to hit the Mail Merge button to see the spreadsheet adding option(shifted from the bottom toolbar to the top right corner).
Google notes that the spreadsheet can contain a maximum of 1,500 recipients, with the ability to pick any data column as the mail merge tag. Also, the sheet must have at least one column containing the recipients’ email addresses and another column with their names. Once selected, the Cc and Bcc options will go null.
All the emails sent in this mode will have an unsubscribe button – adhering to industry standards – and will let the recipients remove themselves from the list. This spreadsheet support is available only in Gmail for the web and may come to all the clients later.
