Months after teasing, Google Chat is reportedly adding support for voice messages on it’s latest Android app, as spotted by a reliable tipster in the app’s unreleased features.
The functionality is available in the form of a new mic option, replacing the Send button in the bottom bar. Users can record, pause and check their recording before sending it to the recipient.

What’s been a staple feature on all instant messengers today – voice messages – has been absent in Google Chat all these years! As we’re wondering why Google ignored it for this long, the company has been pushing the native Messages app mainstream while ignoring Chat(remodelled Hangouts).
Well, as it’s gradually prioritizing everything, a tip from a reliable leaker, AssembleDebug revealed that Google is bringing voice messages to it’s Chat app soon. He claims to have found a relevant flag in the latest version of the Google Chat Android app and Gmail Android app.
When enabled, the option for voice messages popped up, taking the placement of the Send button in the bottom chat bar. Tapping on it will start recording your audio and releasing it will save it temporarily, which you can send after checking or you can delete it for re-recording.
A conventional waveform accompanies the audio recording UI to let users know the progress when listening. These voice messages can be sent to one-on-one and group chats and will come to the Gmail app too.
Voice messages on Google Chat have been a highly requested feature on the Google Cloud Community forum and Google teased the feature back in August 2023 as Audio Snippets. And with today’s leak, we hope to see the feature soon for everyone.
