Google is Working on ‘Pixie’, a Dedicated AI Assistant for Pixel Phones

Google is reportedly working on a new AI assistant dedicated to Pixel handsets – named Pixie. It is said to run on Gemini Nano, which Google unveiled recently.

Pixie is touted to be a powerful assistant compared to the current voice assistants on smartphones, as it can perform various duties. There’s no word on when we will see this in the wild but Google may add this as a niche feature to it’s next-gen Pixel smartphones.

A New and Powerful AI Assistant

Google’s voice assistant is by far the best we have on smartphones today. It’s more powerful than Siri, more creative than Bixby and less annoying than Alexa. Yet, it’s falling behind the current AI craze as Google is compelled to reinvent it’s smartphone assistant.

As per The Information, Google is reportedly making a new AI-based virtual assistant for it’s Pixel smartphones called Pixie. It’s touted to be more powerful than the current Google’s native assistant, as it’s powered by the recently launched Gemini Nano – a ChatGPT-like AI chatbot.

We have already seen what Gemini can do from Google’s demo last week, like summarizing recordings and creating pre-canned replies to messages, so it should help users with their productivity. The Information report also states that all these functions will work on-device, meaning that you do not need an active data connection to perform the actions(at least for some.)

Being an on-device assistant means Google’s Tensor chip is tasked to handle it, so we’re unsure if it will come to all Pixel phones or launch only with the upcoming Pixel 9 Series, scheduled sometime in the fall of 2024.
