Mastodon is Selling Merchandise to Aid its Development

The popular decentralized social media platform – Mastodon is launching it’s own branded merchandise to raise funds for it’s development, announced this week.

The bunch includes Mastodon-themed t-shirts, mugs, enamel pins and stickers created by artist Dopatwo. Prices of these merch are still unknown, while the units are limited to 250 each. Mastodon is running this initial sale as a test to know the community’s response and make more batches available later.

Selling Stuff to Fuel Growth

Mastodon is one of the few social media platforms that people flocked to around when Twitter was falling apart. Funded by Patreon and it’s CEO, Eugen Rochko, Mastodon needs some serious cash to survive in the social media industry.

Though touted as the best decentralized social media platform, it lacks the advertising nerve to fuel it’s growth. Thus, the company is preparing to sell merchandise to raise funds for it’s development efforts. Announcing this decision on Wednesday, the new merch includes Mastodon-branded t-shirts, mugs, enamel pins and stickers created by artist Dopatwo.

All this stuff is manufactured by partner FRESH Merch using responsibly sourced materials, say Mastodon. Prices of all these items are unknown yet, but Mastodon has limited their availability to just 250 units each – making this seem like a test to know the community’s interest in merch.

An earlier poll by Mastodon revealed that over 6,700 respondents would buy something if merch were available. And that’s where the company drew hope from. While there’s no specific timeline given to these products launch, Mastodon offers a mailing list to alert users when they’re available. Also, it’ll inform the community on it’s official Mastodon account

Talking about the stuff, we’d have to say; they’re pretty cute. There are t-shirts featuring Mastodon mascots in different poses and situations and some have the purple Mastodon “M” logo. The company may release more of these based on the initial sale.
