Microsoft is Working on an AI Video Upscaler in Windows 11

Microsoft is working on an AI-based video upscaling feature on Windows 11, as spotted by an X user in the latest Windows insider build.

While it’s still in the making, Microsoft has noted the feature to run supported games more smoothly with enhanced details, when available. It’s unknown what hardware this feature needs to support and how good it can be against the offerings of NVIDIA, AMD or Intel.

AI Video Upscaling in Windows 11

Microsoft is working on a new AI-based video upscaling feature for it’s Windows 11 that may play supported videos more smoothly. PhantomOcean3 spotted this in the latest Windows 11 Insider build, where Microsoft noted it as an automatic super-resolution that uses “AI to make supported games play more smoothly with enhanced details.”

This seems more like Nvidia’s Deep Learning Super Sampling(DLSS) technology, which uses AI to upscale games, like improving their frame rates and image quality. AMD and Intel also have their variants of this kind, named FSR and XeSS, respectively.

As Microsoft hasn’t formally announced this feature yet, we don’t know what hardware this feature requires to run. NVIDIA’s DLSS, on the other hand, uses the tensor cores on it’s RTX-based graphics cards. AMD’s FSR and Intel’s XeSS both run on rival GPUs.

This aside, Microsoft is also working on a new colour management feature for Windows 11, that leverages the display’s HDR to offer more colour options. This increases the customization of OLED monitors, allowing users to set colour profiles for sRGB and DCI-P3.

When available, this new colour management feature will be integrated into the main display settings of Windows 11, offering OS-level colour customizations. While there’s no timeline on when Microsoft will bring this to the public, it’s good to see the company investing more in the display features of Windows 11, which are often skipped in every update.
