Microsoft Removed Cortana in a New Windows 11 Update

As expected, Microsoft has finally killed Cortana for Windows OS while keeping only the feature integrations in the Office suite alive.

While we expect these integrations to be removed soon, Microsoft is pushing it’s Windows users to try the new Bing Chat and Windows Copilot, powered by Generative AI and much better than the legacy Cortana.

Wiping Out Cortana From Windows OS

The day we all anticipated has come. After dumping Cortana from smartphones, Microsoft is finally doing the same for Windows OS, with the latest Windows 11, being the first. As Windows Latest noted, the newest update passed to Cortana through Microsoft Store has the app removed from the OS, for good!

Updating the Cortana app on Windows 11 and opening it says, “Cortana on Windows as a standalone app is deprecated”. But a support article from Microsoft says that Cortana will still be available within apps like Outlook and Microsoft Teams as an integrated feature.

While we expect this integration to be removed soon, Microsoft may remove Cortana from the previous Windows versions, too, later. Though a needed service, Cortana has largely been ignored by both the maker and the community. Microsoft hasn’t pushed any feature updates to Cortana in the past two years and the only update passed this week is to deprecate it.

And the community, which has been exciting the Generative AI craze, has primarily forgotten Cortana too. Thus, aligning with the trend, Microsoft is pushing it’s users to try Bing Chat and Windows Copilot – powered by OpenAI’s GPT LLM, for virtual assistant needs.

With Microsoft killing Cortana, we’re left with Apple’s Siri as the only main player in the virtual assistant market. Amazon and Samsung have ignored their respective virtual assistants a long time ago, while Google is silently replacing it’s native assistant with Google Bard.
