Microsoft to Use Electricity Produced From Helium Atoms Fusion

Microsoft has signed up an agreement with Helion Energy for using its electricity from 2028 onwards, to power most of its operations.

Helion Energy is the world’s first company experimenting to produce electricity from the fusion of helium atoms, thus offering a clean way of energy – which aligns with the long-term commitments of Microsoft.

New-Age Electricity For Microsoft

Microsoft is one of the many tech companies that promised to go carbon neutral in the next decade, by either using new means of energy or aiding the environment to balance its usage. In this pursuit, Redmond has signed up to use Helion Energy’s electricity from 2028 onwards – made from the fusion of helium atoms.

Helion Energy uses a dedicated setup for this kind of energy production, where a barbell-like accelerator is heated over 100 million degrees – containing deuterium and helium-3 in it. A plasma and magnets are used to join both contents within, thus producing energy (electricity).

While this sounds exciting, Helion Energy is far from creating something that Microsoft or the whole world wants. The company is waiting for a new-gen machine next year, that can demonstrate net electricity gain. As we wait for that, Helion tells the plant that Microsoft sources its electricity from, they can produce 50MW and Microsoft has dozens of data centers that consume a lot of such output.

Talking about this deal, Microsoft’s President and VC Brad Smith said

“Helion’s announcement supports our long-term clean energy goals and will advance the market to establish a new, efficient method for bringing more clean energy to the grid, faster”.
