OnePlus 5 Substratum Theme Adds 50+ Accent Colors

If you have root access to the OnePlus 5, the Ozone Substratum theme will let you add more accent colors, action bar colors and more.

I really enjoy the theme options that OnePlus has on the OnePlus 3/3T and the OnePlus 5. It’s rare to see an OEM implement a native dark theme for their software and it’s something that I love having on a smartphone or tablet with an OLED display. OnePlus even went as far as to let you pick your own accent color when you have the Dark Mode option selected. However, this is where things start to get disappointing for me.

See, OnePlus only allows for 8 predetermined accent colors for the OnePlus 5 when it is in Dark Mode. Not only that, but they went with such an odd pastel style of choices that I can’t really enjoy any of them.

Thankfully though, there are mods out there that can fill in this gap. I had wanted to cover this Ozone mod back for the OnePlus 3/3T, but always bootlooped when I flashed the ZIP file. This time around it’s been implemented in as a Substratum theme and is much easier to setup.

This Ozone Substratum theme for the OnePlus 5 has a ton of different options (not just 50+ accent colors). You can see some of these in the embedded video below, but it’s definitely something you’ll want to try out for yourself. Since this requires you have Substratum installed and functional, you need to have the bootloader of the OnePlus 5 unlocked. That is required because you then need to install TWRP on the OnePlus 5 and then you’ll also need to gain root access to the OnePlus 5.

OnePlus 5 Ozone Theme

  1. Install Substratum on the OnePlus 5
  2. Launch Substratum and grant it root access
  3. Download the Ozone APK file to the OnePlus 5
  4. Sideload the Ozone Substratum theme
  5. Launch the Substratum application
  6. Tap the Ozone Substratum theme entry
  7. Choose the accent color you want (and any other options)
  8. Make sure to tap the empty check box next to what you want to install
  9. Tap the paint roller icon at the bottom right
  10. Tap the Install Selection option
  11. Wait for Substratum to install the overlays you selected
  12. Tap the OK button when prompted to reboot the OnePlus 5
  13. Wait for the OnePlus 5 to reboot into OxygenOS with your changes

Explanation

If you’ve ever installed a Substratum theme in the past, then you’ll feel right at home here. I appreciate the developer (ungeeked) using the Substratum method since I was having so much trouble with how it was done before. Substratum themes are much easier for a collection of changes that are in Ozone so I feel it’s better suited here. All you need to do is visit the XDA thread for the theme that is linked in Step 3 of the guide above.

In the Installation section you should see a download link for the Ozone APK itself. That will take you to another page where there will be multiple downloads to choose from. Just grab the latest version and you’ll be good to go. Once the APK file has been downloaded, open it up and complete the application installer prompt so it has been sideloaded onto your device. From here, just tap Done at the end of the installer or you can tap the Home button.

You should get a notification from Substratum saying a new theme has been installed. So go ahead and launch the Substratum application and you should see the Ozone theme listed. Tapping on it will take you into the theme and this is where you can go through all of the options. As mentioned, there’s a lot to choose from including 50+ accent colors, 10+ action bar colors, quick settings background options, clear all placement changes, and more.

You can follow along with the video above and I go through some of these. I mainly focus on the accent color option though as it’s a simple mod that I’ve been looking for. Once you have selected the changes you want, make sure the check box next to it has been selected as well (this tells Substratum which overlays you want to install). Then you can tap the paint roller icon at the bottom right and then tap the Install Selected option.

After they are installed, a box should appear telling you to tap OK to reboot. Tap the OK button and wait for the OnePlus 5 to reboot back into OxygenOS with the changes you have made.
