Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra Has An Epic Camera

Samsung recently revealed a range of new Galaxy Phones for the year 2020. Among those to steal the show were the Galaxy Z Slip and the Galaxy S20 Ultra. And so far, the most remarked feature of the S20 Ultra has been its camera.

The Galaxy S20 will have three variants: the 6.2-inch Galaxy S20, the 6.7-inch Galaxy S20 plus and the 6.9-inch Galaxy S20 Ultra. The prices of these phones start at $1000, $1200 and $1400 respectably. Of the three variants, the S20 Ultra has the most advanced camera setup.

Compared to the camera setup in the previous gen of Galaxy S phones (the S10 plus), the S20 Ultra camera has two new features in its setup. The first is a great new zoom lens in the form of a periscope lens. This lens, Samsung claims, is able to zoom at a whooping 100x.

The second amazing feature that Samsung has introduced in the S20 Ultra is the 108-megapixel sensor for its main wide-angle lens.

A 108-Megapixel Camera: What’s It Like?

In the smartphone market, Chinese companies have been pioneers in introducing 108-megapixel sensors in their cameras (like Xiaomi’s Mi Note 10). Until just few years back, a high-megapixel count was widely seem as just a marketing gimmick. Not only did high-megapixel counts do nothing to improve the quality of the pictures, they actually made things worse.

But we’ve come a long way in the last few years. Thanks to rapid advancements in the quality of the lens, the processors and the camera software in smartphones, we are now at a point where cameras can actually make the most of the high megapixel sensors.

While the S20 Ultra camera is still a small-sensor camera with a large megapixel count, experts still seem to agree that its 108-megapixel sensor will help it take better photos. Here is how.

Galaxy S20 Ultra: Photo Quality

Samsung has used the 0.8-micron pixel from its 48/64 megapixel sensors and expanded the area linearly to get to 108 megapixels. But thanks to the camera’s large aperture size (f/1.8), it will be able to gather more light into this sensor. This will effectively help the S20 Ultra produce some of the best photos in the mobile market.

Of course, noise is still an issue. But thanks to recent advancement in camera software, the device can improve the picture quality of photos taken in low light conditions by comparing the data of neighboring pixels. This will still however reduce the resolution of the photo. In well-lit environments, the camera will revert to taking full resolution photos.

Of course, we really won’t be able to tell how good the S20 Ultra’s camera is until we get our hands on one. Samsung has definitely upgraded the hardware side of its cameras. But will their software be able to live up to the upgrade. Like we’ve seem with the Pixel 3 cameras, it is often the software-hardware integration that plays a bigger role at improving the photo quality of phone cameras than the hardware itself.
