Long after Microsoft and Nvidia, Sony is now venturing into the cloud gaming space – as per an announcement from the PlayStation’s VP this week.
Sony is currently testing the cloud streaming of specific PS5 titles, including all the digital games and game trials to be played on consoles, without downloading them first. This support will be given as an additional perk to the current PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers, says Sony.
Cloud Streaming of PlayStation Games
Could gaming is a fast-growing space in the current tech industry, with companies like Microsoft and Nvidia already having their hardware set in millions of hands. Though Google failed to withstand the competition, Sony is yet to enter the field with a reliable idea.
And it’s finally happening, with the company’s PlayStation wing announcing this week that it’s testing some PS5 titles to cloud stream on consoles. As per PlayStation’s Nick Maguire, the company is testing the cloud streaming of “PS5 titles from the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog and Game Trials, as well as supported digital PS5 titles that players own”.
This will be given as “an additional benefit” to PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers when available. This will let users play the supported games on their consoles without downloading them first. Though PlayStation already has a handheld device called “Project Q“, – which streams the PS5 games from your console over a Wi-Fi connection, Sony is yet to venture into cloud gaming as Microsoft or Nvidia did.
And this latest move will only set a path for the company, which is super successful in the gaming console business. PlayStation 5 consoles are sold like hotcakes whenever they’re out, garnering billions of dollars in revenue for Sony and adding cloud gaming support will only fuel more growth to the current business.
