Sony at CES 2024 unveiled a new MR headset with controlling peripherals for “spatial content creation”.

The company hasn’t described a name for this headset but says it’ll offer a “crisp viewing experience” and “intuitive interaction for 3D design“. With no pricing and availability details, Sony’s new MR headset is touted to arrive later this year and will certainly not rival Apple’s Vision Pro.

Sony’s Headset For Creators

One of the many things Sony announced at CES 2024 is a new MR headset – that hasn’t had a name but is aimed at spatial content creation. With a matte grey finish, the headset looks like a stripped-down version of the PSVR2 and comes with a controller stick and a ring!

Though Sony didn’t reveal much on the stage, a PR material released later mentions the device using Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chipset. The new chipset can power 4K OLED microdisplays and provides “user and space tracking” for mixed reality experiences.

Sony is targeting creators and artists with this product to manipulate and craft products in virtual spaces. With six cameras and sensors, the device works by “holding the pointing controller in the dominant hand and attaching the ring controller to the fingers of the other hand, creators can model 3D objects using both controllers and a keyboard, while wearing the head-mounted display”.

Sony says the headset’s fine-tuned to balance the device properly and with the display part being able to flip up and detachable, the wearer can switch between their virtual and real-world works without removing the headset entirely. While there are no details on pricing, Sony could launch it in the latter half of 2024.

All these make Sony’s MR headset no rival to Apple’s Vision Pro but more a creative take on Microsoft’s HoloLens. Hoping to learn more about it by the end of this event, Sony says users can review and collaborate on work remotely by using third-party creative apps coming in the near future. A mock-up by Sony shows a user tinkering with a bipedal robot, manipulating it’s arm, wearing the new headset. Two monitors connected to their activity showed things in extra detail.
