TikTok Kills its BeReal-like Clone, TikTok Now

Less than a year after launching, TikTok is discontinuing it’s BeReal clone – TikTok Now, this week. A notification within the app mentions this move and removes the Now option from the bottom menu.

While users can no longer make any Now posts, they can find their previous posts in Profile > Private Tab > Now Memories. TikTok hasn’t mentioned a reason for this update, but it’s likely due to the falling popularity of the BeReal-like trend in the community.

Shutting Down ‘TikTok Now’

Though it’s common for tech companies to add/rip off features that don’t work as expected, the trend is rapidly shifting gears based on the company’s patience. While Google waits a couple of years or a decade before dumping any offering, software-based firms these days are doing it in months!

The latest example is TikTok, as the platform dumps its Now feature this week. TikTok Now is a clone of BeReal, an app that asks users to take a front and back camera photo at a random time every day, aimed at capturing authentic pictures of what our friends do at random intervals.

This offering was a hit during the COVID-19 time when many people were left clueless in pandemic situations. It’s so popular that tech giants like Snapchat and Instagram started making their BeReal clones and TikTok, too, has made a standalone app and even integrated it into it’s leading platform.

Well, now, it’s ditching the feature without mentioning any reason this week. The app started notifying users that it was “updating the TikTok experience and is discontinuing TikTok Now”, barring users from making any new Now posts.

Removing the option from the app’s bottom navigation bar, TikTok says users can check their previous Now posts by navigating to Profile > Private Tab > Now Memories. It’s assumed that the fall of BeReal is why TikTok is dumping this feature now, although BeReal says it’s maintaining constant growth every month.
