While many automakers are preparing to stuff some form of AI into their cars, Volkswagen started integrating ChatGPT into Tiguan, Passat, Golf and all of it’s ID electric vehicles.

Vehicles with ChatGPT integration will be on the road from Q2 2024, activated with voice commands or a dedicated button on the steering wheel. Volkswagen says the data collected during a conversation will be immediately deleted and not shared with OpenAI.

ChatGPT in Volkswagen Cars

Just a year after being announced, ChatGPT was picked by various OEMs to be integrated into their products, with the latest ones being the automakers. Amongst them, Volkswagen is cooking the AI chatbot into their entire range of ID EVs, Tiguan, Passat and Golf cars from the second quarter of 2024.

This is a needed addition, as many voice assistants in today’s cars are slow and lack conversational skills. They either pick false positives or need repeated vocal instructions to function correctly. This led many automakers to rely on Google Assistant or Amazon’s Alexa.

Thus, to make naturalistic communications with the drivers and passengers, Volkswagen is integrating the popular chatbot into it’s future cars. The feature will arrive to Europe first, followed by the US – although the plans aren’t finalized yet.

Volkswagen says that users don’t need to create a new account or install any apps but can activate ChatGPT by calling as “Hello IDA” or pressing a button on the steering wheel. When activated, they can ask the chatbot to control essential functions like heating and air conditioning or to answer “general knowledge questions”.

The company is confident that this integration will prove it’s worth in the future, as many functions like “clearing up questions, interacting in intuitive language, receiving vehicle-specific information, and much more” are coming soon.

Further, Volkswagen assures that no data was shared with OpenAI and the conversations are “deleted immediately to ensure the highest possible level of data protection”. The company had a rough growth in 2023 with disappointing sales, software malfunctions and layoffs. So, an AI boost like ChatGPT integration is the best one to have now.
