WhatsApp is Testing Usernames and Screen Sharing Features

WhatsApp 'Chat Lock' is Coming Soon, Confirms Mark Zuckerberg

WhatsApp is reportedly testing a new username feature for it’s users – where they can reserve a dedicated alias handle name for their account to be easily recognisable.

Also, WhatsApp was found testing a screen-sharing feature similar to video conferencing apps, which lets users share their screen to guide others better. Both these features are still in the beta phase and could be rolled out later.

Screen Sharing on WhatsApp

As WhatsApp is trying hard to match up with it’s rival messengers, the platform was seen testing two new features in different beta versions. As noted by WaBetaInfo, the WhatsApp Android beta v2.23.11.15 has a new username selection option – where users can attach a unique username to their account.

This is similar to an alias name set to a Telegram account, which makes you distinct from other similar accounts. This would eventually let others find you through the username instead of your phone number and the chats thereon will be end-to-end encrypted by default.

Aside from this, the WhatsApp Android beta v2.23.11.19 is seen having a new screen-sharing feature – that also lets users record the portion of the call while it’s on. This makes it easier for you to guide others or check their screen while on a video call.

WhatsApp is also said to be testing a “status archive” feature for business accounts, that will let them archive statuses after 24 hours to be shared again in the future. While this support currently seems to be limited only to businesses, it may come to regular users too, later.

While it’s interesting to see WhatsApp testing these features, we may not ever see them  come to light if the company decides not to. Thus, being with hope until then is just what we can do. Stay tuned.
