X iOS App Gets Passkeys Support in the US

X Twitter

X on iOS now supports passkeys, letting users log in through their device biometrics for secure access.

Well, this support is currently available only in the US and there’s no word on when this could arrive on the X Android app. Until then, eligible users can activate this in the app Settings and use it.

Passkeys on X iOS

Months after removing support for SMS-based 2FA, X has now developed passkey support for it’s iOS app, which lets users log in to their account more securely than the traditional way.

Initiated by Google, Apple, Microsoft, and the FIDO alliance, Passkeys are the new-gen technology to ditch passwords and provide a secure and easy way for users to access their accounts. When enabled, users can use their device biometrics like Face ID, Touch ID or PIN to authenticate, making it easier and faster.

More importantly, this new method will avoid regular password-stealing hacks like phishing, as there’s no password involved. Understanding it’s importance, Apple added passkeys support for iOS in 2022, with the launch of iOS 16, iPadOS 16.1, and in macOS Ventura and later.

This lets app developers cook support for passkeys in their apps, too, as X did now. Announcing it, X says passkeys are currently available for it’s iOS app in the US, with Android and other regions to gain it later. Interested users can set this up by following the below steps;

  1. Log in to the X app.
  2. Click Your account in the navigation bar.
  3. Select Settings and Privacy, then click Security and Account Access, then Security.
  4. Under Additional password protection, click Passkey.
  5. Enter your password when prompted.
  6. Select Add a Passkey and follow the prompts.
