Acer’s Employee Data Theft

Acer, the Taiwanese computer equipment manufacturer, has just confirmed a data theft of it’s Philippines employees resulting from a breach on it’s third-party vendor. Yesterday, an unknown account on a hacking forum posted a link to download the stolen database – reports BleepingComputer.

The poster said there was no ransomware or encryption involved in the incident and it was a pure data theft. While stating they were not attempting to extort the company, they provided evidence of wiping the data from Acer’s breached servers before losing access.

Later that day, an Acer spokesperson confirmed the incident on X, saying it resulted from a hack on one of its third-party vendors. Assuring that no customer data was involved, Acer said it notified the National Privacy Commission (NPC) and the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) in the Philippines and is investigating the incident for more details.

This isn’t the first time Acer has tangled with cybersecurity incidents. In March 2021, the company broke the record for the highest ransom being demanded by a ransomware group – of $50 million. Later that year, Acer revealed that it’s India-based after-sales service had been compromised and millions of records containing customer data were stolen.

In February last year, hackers breached Acer’s server containing technical manuals, software tools, BIOS images, replacement digital product keys(RDPK), etc.
