Google Launches Android 15 Beta 1 Update for Pixel Devices Ahead of Google I/O 2024

Android 15

Google has commenced the rolling out of the Android 15 Beta 1 update for all supported Google Pixel devices, a month before Google I/O 2024. If you are eager to experience what Google has in store for the next major Android update and own a compatible Google Pixel device, you can readily download this update. This release primarily emphasizes security and privacy features, with minimal disclosed UI alterations. However, users can still anticipate some minor UI adjustments.

Google indicated that further insights into the forthcoming OS update will be revealed during it’s Google I/O 2024 event in May 2024. Described as an “initial beta-quality release” by Google, this update is deemed safe for use, enabling users to embrace the full Android 15 experience. Those enrolled in the Android Beta program will automatically receive the over-the-air update, provided they possess a supported Google Pixel device. For individuals not previously enrolled in the Android Beta program, enrollment is necessary to access this update. We will provide a separate guide on installing this latest Android update on supported Google Pixel devices, catering to Android enthusiasts seeking to explore it’s features.

Regarding the noteworthy changes and features introduced in this update, Android 15 Beta 1 presents several upgrades compared to it’s predecessor, Android 14. Notably, apps targeting Android 15 now span edge-to-edge on compatible devices, appearing behind the system states and gestures bar. Additionally, app archiving and unarchiving have been formally integrated into the OS. Furthermore, a new E2eeContactKeysManager feature has been introduced that “facilitates end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for your Android apps by providing an OS-level API for the storage of cryptographic public keys”.

Here’s a summary of the key changes brought by Google in this update:

“Apps can now register a fingerprint on supported devices so they can be notified of polling loop activity, which allows for smooth operation with multiple NFC-aware applications”.

“Android 15 brings additional changes to prevent malicious background apps from bringing other apps to the foreground, elevating their privileges, and abusing user interaction, aiming to protect users from malicious apps and give them more control over their devices”.

Android 15 Beta 1, identified by version number AP31.240322.018 and accompanied by the April 2024 security patch, is accessible to the Google Pixel 6 series, Pixel 7 series, Pixel 8 series, Pixel Tablet, Pixel Fold, and Android emulators.

Users with the aforementioned devices who are enrolled in the Android Beta program will promptly receive the Android 15 Beta 1 OTA update, facilitating a straightforward installation process akin to standard Android updates.

Regrettably, Google has ceased support for the Pixel 5 series and earlier devices, meaning users with these devices will not receive the update.

For those interested in installing this update, Google has provided a message. For more information, you can head over here.

“Devices running Android 15 DP1 (build AP31.240119.016) or Android 14 QPR3 Beta 1 (build AP21.240119.009) are not able to sideload the images of the Android 15 Beta 1 build (build AP31.240322.018) due to a bug in the installed build. If you would like to sideload Android 15 Beta 1, first take the OTA update to Android 15 DP2 (build AP31.240223.016.A3) or Android 14 QPR3 Beta 2 (build AP21.240305.005)”.
